Bio: It’s the first warm day of spring; the proper sort of warm that isn’t noticed until the sting of sunshine is felt on the back of your neck.

There’s a multitude of things you could start worrying about right now. “Did I bring sunscreen? How long before the waxing of the springtime sun starts to get to me? Should I even be out here? Will I have time later on to tackle the hydra-esque, to-do list? Will I be sore tomorrow morning at work?”

Yet as quickly as the worries build, they vanish into the dust kicked up under your ground-down old spikes, because you just dug in with a freshly-taped bit of pine in your hands. And right now, your only worry is a ball of cork, leather, and red stitching that was just thrown at you from the only guy you know out here on this ramshackle of a sandlot.

But you don’t worry. The old instincts have kicked in, and you recognize the top spin of the ball, see how it rises a bit more than it should, and that’s when you grin, give the ball another moment to float in, and…

CRACK! You did it! You made contact! Your friend bragged about his curveball, but you definitely questioned the tensile strength of the red cotton thread as you poked that ball over the mound and between the middle infielders for a line drive to no-man’s land.

Suddenly, the race is on. Your arms remembered how to hit, but did you remind your legs how to run? They’ve got the mechanics down, but the grass and dirt used to look much more blurry back the day. It’s nothing to worry about; the lanky one-bagger isn’t even covering the base.

The fielders are too shocked by your at-bat to react or to fall into the formation that would necessitate the proper fielding of such an excellent hit. With one final stretch, your foot hits the dirt-stained base and you give a humble turn-and-look to second base…and that’s when you see your Odysseusean line drive to center field being held by shortstop, who caught your soft bloop at the edge of the grass.

With a stolid nod and a check of your pride, you traipse back to the wobbly, paint-pealed bench, and think, “Damnit…I had no idea how much I missed playing this game.”

That’s baseball. That’s sandlot. That’s what started it all for the Tulsa City Jesters.
